Water network monitoring

An innovating monitoring system

The Scenario
A more efficient use of water resources through the smart water management, in order to reduce water consumption and increase the energy savings. This is the most important goal for almost all Italian towns: some of them decided to monitor the basic features for every water well and pumping station with the aim to project and build an effective saving plan.


The Request
The main requirement we have been asked for was to register the data of the subterrean waters level, the pressure and the stream during the pumping phase. Afetr collecting data for a long term period, the water supplies company could be aware of the water withdrawal and the level fluctuation, thus preventing problems during a dry period.
Another requirement was the pumps monitoring to:
– Measure the energy consumption
– Calculate if they are working with the highest possible efficiency
– Obtain an immediate information in case a danger situation occurs


The Solution
The solution that 4-noks adopted was to install in an electric cabin on the ground of the network the ZB-Connection ModBus Bridge: this device reads the data of the level, of the pressure sensors and of the flow meters.
The ZB-Connection ZR-HMETER device was also employed to get electricity consumption parameters. Since the range of the wells was too big, there was installed some repeaters because some measurement points were too far.
The picture on the right shows the dislocation of the wells (red spots) and the central monitoring station (red rectangle). The yellow dots are the ZigBeeZB-Connection signal repeating devices.


The Benefits
Municipal companies can receive a live update about:
– the situation of all the wells of the network;
– the pump breakdown;
– the efficiency of every pump.
Everything thank to the ZB- HMETER ZB-Connection device, as by using it is now possible to make a correlation between the power jolt and the stream.
The ZigBee wireless network allowed to save a lot of money during the building of the plant (the old-style installation would heve required more than 10 kms of underground cables). Lastly, knowing the level of every well you avoid withdrawing water form the dryest ones, improving the overall quality of the waters and reducing the costs for depuration.
